Lake Eyasi Foundation Trust

A number of different projects are being carried out in close cooperation with local charity organisation Eyasi Foundation Trust.
One of the project areas is in Northern Tanzania on the shores of Lake Eyasi. A mixed forest of acacias and ilala palms forms the natural vegetation of the lakeside area, which is home to over 200 types of birds, reptiles, small and large mammals and many different kinds of insects.

It is a region with extremely low rainfall. As a result of firewood harvesting, overgrazing and intensive agriculture, extensive areas have been robbed of their natural vegetation, which in turn has led to lasting soil degradation. In order to counter this, there are plans to acquire land that can be renatured through strategic reforestation, thereby allowing the original habitat to be restored.

In the last 12 months, the sale of greeting cards and calendars enabled 50,000 m² of land to be financed. More land is scheduled to be acquired as soon as sufficient funds are available. In the medium term, this will create a zone which will not only allow the soil to be renatured but which will also provide a new home for threatened animal and plant species. The degenerated land is to be renatured in cooperation with a Tanzanian employee of the Eyasi Trust Foundation who has already established a small tree nursery with native plants – and with the help of a neighbouring school, which will allow the children to learn environmental awareness through hands-on activities.
